Non-traditional BEST OF 2009 Weddings-Music

One of our goals at Blissful Beginnings is to help our clients to create completely personalized events, and sometimes that means incorporating non-traditional elements or ideas into the event. While driving back from last Saturday's wedding, I had the idea to "shout out" some of these fabulous "out of the ordinary" ideas that we saw and loved this season.

I thought I'd start with Music because I listen to music of all genres and I think it's a great way to personalize your wedding. Not to say that Pachelbel's "Cannon in D" or Wagner's "Bridal Chorus" is passe, but many Brides fear thinking outside of the box in this area. If you'd like a traditional classical or spiritual soundtrack at your wedding, go with it! But, also take some cues from your Ipod or the tunes you rock out to in the car when planning your wedding day music...

Some of our "greatest hits" from 2009 Weddings

1. Ceremony processional selections from Michelle and Tony's wedding in Etna, NH in September. Tony and Michelle used songs from Eddie Vedder's "Into the Wild" movie soundtrack, including "Photographs" and "Tuolumne"
As a BIG Pearl Jam fan, I loved these choices. They are so emotional and lovely. Also, if you haven't seen the movie, Check it out. The sountrack makes the movie!!!

2. Best Recessional: Shiny Happy People by REM from Tamara and Will's summer wedding at Rye Harbor State Park. Fun, upbeat and definitely got guests ready for an afternoon of fun and games by the ocean. You'll see them mentioned again when we get to Non-tradtional food!

3. Cocktail hour Soundtrack- sorry, I have to take this one from my own wedding in April. Henry and I had casino themed cocktail hour at our wedding- a little tongue in cheek take on having met eachother on on the "luckiest day of the century" 7/7/07...
We celebrated by setting up a casino for our guests and awarded "high roller" prizes for the lucky winners. I asked our good friend and DJ, Noah Phillips to take his musical direction from Las Vegas based casino movies from the 70's and 80's- Rolling Stones, Louis Prima, etc. It was festive and fun...like listening to a classic rock station. It went great with turning cards and spinning roulette wheels.

4. Wedding Party Into- The FOX NFL fanfare from Karen and Mike's September Wedding- need I say more? This couple LOVES their sports!

5. Bride and Groom's first dance- Jess and Scott's custom written first dance song by friend, maid of honor and musician, Mary Delay. What better gift than a song about your love? It was beautiful.Photo, Alice Garrik

6. Best Wedding Closer- this is BY FAR my favorite music moment of the season- Sarah and Hugh's wedding at Crane Estete in June. After a lovely evening of Swing/Jazz standards by The Tom Snow Band these tuxedo-buttoned-up gentlemen RIPPED into a personal request of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" for the bride and groom. The room erupted, it was like a concert- hands in the air, jaws fell open! "WAyyyyyyyy down inSIDE, WOMAN, you NEEEEEEED Me! AHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHhh! Really, it was the best.

Best of NH Magazine Bride!

I am SOOOO proud to have been named Best Wedding Planner and Best Justice of the Peace by New Hampshire Magazine Bride voters! What an honor!

2009 has been a crazy season that epitomizes exactly why I love my job. Wedding season has been full of wild weather (RAIN!!! Tent heaters in August? Humidity! More RAIN!) as well as the financial concerns of couples and families during the planning process. As a wedding planner, my job is to alleviate fears and troubleshoot issues, work within the event budget and help find the answers. It's so much more than "making it look pretty"- it's making the event WORK!

I so appreciate that my clients and colleagues (friends!) took the time to vote for Blissful Beginnings and recognize our effort. Every event is a team undertaking, and I am thankful to all of the wonderful vendors who are open to keeping the wedding industry a FUN place to work!

Congratulations to all of the winners!

Thanks again to all!!!

Blissful Events: A Grand 4th of July Wedding Celebration

Katie and Eric's wedding celebration over the July 4th weekend was as festive as these two are gorgeous!

The event was hosted at a family summer home on Squam Lake and although mother nature has been keeping us on our toes this year (a 30 minute long thunderstorm with ferocious winds right off the lake and into our tent 2 hours prior to the ceremony??? This season it seems like par for the course!), the celebration went off without a hitch.

Boating out to Church Island for the ceremony...getting 175 guests, musicians and a design team out to the island is a strategic process!
But the Bride and Groom look flawless!!!
I love a crowd surfing couple!!!
Fireworks of course to send off the Bride and Groom in style!
Many thanks to Matt and Liz Hinkley for the photos! www.hinkleyphoto.com

Blissful Events: The Sweetest Day

Just wanted to showcase the wonderful wedding of Valerie and Adam last Saturday.
This couple was not afraid of color and the turquoise and cherry red combination was amazing!

The florals and the custom white birch huppah were created by Jessica Christopherson of Cymbidium Floral in Exeter, NH. I was honored to officiate the ceremony as well as coordinate and provide event design details for the event.

Wonderful Watercolors

I am so happy that I met Sara O'Brien of Griffin-vites last year through a mutual client. Sara creates beautiful custom watercolor art wedding invitations, social stationery, accessories, etc.

I absolutely love her work. Her designs are fun and have a whimsical quality that I haven't seen elsewhere. What can I say, as a true romantic, I am a sucker for crabs holding claws...
Check out her work at www.griffin-vites.com and don't miss the Pet Notes section. If you love your four legged friend, you'll love her custom pet designs, too!!!

More Thanks and Raves-Part 3

(photo, melindabutler.com)
My gorgeous silk organza and alencon lace wedding gown was a Judd Waddell, and my bridemaids wore chocolate taffeta gowns by Watters and Watters, all purchased at Madeleine's Daughter in Portsmouth, NH.

Many, many, many thanks to my friend, bridal consultant Natalie Hanson who has worked with many of my Brides and helped me to find the perfect dress, veil and shoes. She was also very patient with me in my search to find the perfect chocolate brown (that one's too red! that one's too orange!) bridesmaid style.

Here's me and Natalie at a Madeleine's Daughter event last summer! XOXOXO Natalie!!!

Wedding Gown Shopping Tips...

Many of my Brides ask me for "Words of Wisdom" before heading out to begin their search for "The Perfect Gown." I had an article published a few years ago that included these tips and I find that it does help to consider a few things before stepping out on your shopping excursion!

Helpful Hints on Shopping for Your Wedding Gown

1. Perhaps the most important tip-Have something to eat before you shop, trying on those heavy gowns all day can be akin to a day at the gym!

2. Appointments are helpful. Although you may be tempted to drop into a shop and start looking on the first Saturday after your proposal, be aware that setting up appointments will afford you more assistance at the salon. Also, bear in mind that weekends are very busy at most formalwear shops, especially during the busy bridal and prom seasons.

3. Scan that pile of magazines on your coffee table and bring along sample photos of dresses that you like. Don't be afraid to show your bridal consultant photos of neckline, hem, train, sleeve and fabric details. She will use this as a guide to the styles and elements you are most partial too. A picture is worth a thousand words!

4. Try several different styles and design elements to see what flatters your figure most. Don't get caught up in current trends alone. Also, try several different fabric hues. Shades are available from the purest white, to ivory, to rose to mocha. Many gowns are available in a choice of colors or fabrics, as well as 2-tone or with color accents.

5. Wear undergarments that you will not be embarrassed to be seen in, or carry along your own strapless or longline bra and a slip. Many reputable shops provide or require in-the-dressing room assistance so that sample gowns do not withstand too much wear and tear. If you are uncomfortable with this kind of help, just realize that bridal consultants have experience in fabric, dress lines and current styles and are trained to ensure you a good fit and flattering style.

6. Don't bring along an entourage- 1 or 2 girlfriends and Mom is enough! Choose to take your bridal party along for bridesmaid dresses on another day. Changing rooms are small and too many opinions can be confusing and even frustrating!

7. Sizing- Here is the tricky part. Don't be surprised if you are fitted for a larger size in a wedding gown than your usual off-the-rack size. Wedding gown sizes are based on bust, waist and hip proportion measurements. Your measurements are compared to the specific designer's sizing diagram. Each designer uses their own chart for sizing purposes. Many wedding gown retailers will allow you to "sign off" on ordering a smaller size than is suggested by the manufacturer if you are dieting or expect to lose weight at your own risk, but be aware that most gowns can be taken in up to 2 dress sizes with little difficulty but can only be let out minimally, if at all. There are also often additional charges for extra length (usually 5'9" or taller,) plus sizes and of course, custom requests likes linings, fabric or embellishment changes.

8. Alterations- MYTH-Gown retailers purposely order a size too large to ensure alteration charges. This could not be more incorrect! As noted above, gown retailers match your measurements to the vendor's sizing chart to find the best size for you. Therefore, if your waist and hip measurements fit a size 8, but your bust is a size 12, you'll need to order the gown to accommodate your bust and alter the gown down to your smaller measurements. This will ensure the most flattering fit. The majority of gowns require alterations of some kind.

9. Take your time, but do not wait too long. Many vendors can require 9 months for delivery. Conversely, if you are getting married in 2+ years, wait until the 1 year mark to gown shop. Your figure as well as current gown trends can easily change and this will help you to get the best style and size ordered.

10. Follow care directions from your bridal shop when you bring it home. Most salons or seamstresses will press your gown before pickup and suggest that you remove the garment bag as soon as possible so it will not wrinkle. It is best to place a clean sheet on the floor and hang your gown, veil and petticoat in a spare room away from people and pets to make sure it stays clean. You may also ask if the dress may be spot steamed or pressed if needed. Some fabrics do not tolerate steam and can show waterwarks, so be sure to ask first.

11. Finally- BEWARE of ordering your gown from an online retailer. These shops may offer a cheaper price, but will not offer you the insight into sizing, correct measurements and customer service.

Dance the night away in a gown that suits your style, personality and the formality of your Wonderful Wedding Day!!!
